PORT ORCHARD — It’s anyone’s guess if the creations made of hay, cloth and metal now on display inside the Port Orchard Market come spookily alive when the doors close at night, but for daytime visitors to the Bay Street establishment, this eclectic, eerie collection of scarecrows are ready for inspection and your vote.

One of those taking a look at the scarecrows was 4-year-old Alice Taylor, who was visiting the public market with her mother Stephanie Taylor. Alice and her mom are residents of Port Orchard.

After sizing up the entrants, Alice proclaimed her favorite is a scarecrow with a colorfully painted mask. She especially liked the Home Made Cafe sign’s lettering, Alice added.

The life-size group of Halloween scarecrows was created by residents and businesses from throughout South Kitsap as part of the Port Orchard Scarecrow Contest, sponsored by the Port Orchard Bay Street Association.

The contest entries will be on display through Nov. 3. An awards ceremony honoring the contest winners will take place at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2.
