Four Cougar swimmers compete at state meet

The top swimmers from Central Kitsap High School competed in the 3A Girls State Swim & Dive Championships last week at the King County Aquatics Center in Federal Way.
During Friday’s preliminary races, Tatiana Tubberville competed in the 200-yard freestyle.
Tubberville qualified for the state meet with a time of 2:06.10.
A freshman, she improved on her time and finished in the preliminaries at 20th place, in 2:06.06.
Tubberville also swam in the 500-yard freestyle.
She punched her ticket to the state meet with a time of 5:37.13, and claimed the 20th spot in the preliminaries by finishing in 5:39.70.
Fellow Cougar Leah Avery, a senior, raced in the 200-yard individual medley.
Avery qualified for the state championships with a time of 2:17.46, and her time of 2:19.22 in last Friday’s preliminaries put her in 16th place with a chance to swim again the following day.
She finished again at 16th in the consolation race on Saturday, and posted a time of 2:19.49.
Avery also raced in the 100-yard backstroke. She advanced to state with a time of 1:03.49, then picked up the pace to finish at 1:02.90 in the preliminaries for 17th place, just missing the cut for the finals.
Grace Smith of Central Kitsap raced in the 100-yard butterfly after qualifying for state with a time of 1:02.65.
The sophomore finished at 21st in the preliminaries with an improved time of 1:02.24.
The Central Kitsap 400-yard freestyle team of Tubberville, Kelsy Cain, Smith and Avery advanced from Friday’s preliminary race in the 400-yard freestyle relay to qualify for the consolation race on Saturday.
The foursome finished in 15th place in 3:55.05, an improvement over the relay team’s qualifying time of 3:55.28.
The team advanced to Saturday’s final in the 400 free, where they claimed the 16th spot in 3:53.92.
