Planning, fundraising under way for Kingston Fourth of July

Volunteers serving on the Kingston Fourth of July Celebration Committee began meeting in January to plan this year’s festivity. The job is a big one. Volunteers organize, staff, fund and insure the Parade, Tiny Town, the 4th of July 5K fun run, the fireworks display, main stage music leading up to the fireworks, coordinate vendors, port-a-potties, security patrols, communications and publication of advertising and scheduling posters.
This year, an added event will be a skateboard competition at Billie Johnson Skate Park on Lindvog Road to be held on July 3.
More volunteers are needed, including a parade manager. People interested in volunteering can contact Pete DeBoer at (360) 649 1806 or pete@petedeboer.com, or Dale Rude at (360) 265-6761 or drudeusa@hotmail.com.
The committee is also considering the idea of having a business organize and sponsor the parade. The business could have its name added to the Grand Old 4th of July Parade title. Interested businesses can contact DeBoer or Rude. There are guiding documents and experienced volunteers to help business managers through the process.
Fundraising for the Fourth is also under way. The committee is hoping to get its donation drive off to a faster start than in 2010, when organizers considered cancelling fireworks and other events due to a lack of money. A last-minute contribution from the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe helped the show go on. The fireworks display costs about $17,000.
Donation jars are being placed around Kingston to collect money. Members of the committee will contact businesses directly to ask for support. Contributors can also consider sponsoring a band and have a banner displayed on the stage. Donors can also fill out the form below and send it to the committee with their contribution.
Buttons and other Fourth of July paraphernalia have been ordered and will be available soon. Sales benefit the Fourth effort.
