Bremerton City Council approves city improvement projects

The Bremerton City Council approved several federal and state-funded grants Wednesday intended to make citywide improvements, including street upgrades and the renovation of Matan Park in Anderson Cove.
The Council voted 9-0 to request nearly $1.2 million in Community Development Block Grant and Home Investment Partnerships dollars from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Projects that would be paid for by the money include the renovation of the Coffee Oasis teen center, a Lions Park playground, a United Way community center and a Bay Vista affordable homeownership program by the Bremerton Housing Authority.
The Counil voted 9-0 to accept a more than $1.3 million state grant for low-impact development projects throughout the city. Projects aided by this grant include street improvements on Pacific Avenue from 11th Street to Evergreen Rotary Park and on Fifth Street from Chester Avenue to Veneta Avenue, where new pervious pavement will be laid and street widths will be reduced. Of the $1.3 million, $800,000 will go to the upgrade of Matan Park and the potential acquisition of Anderson Cove waterfront property, which would be used for recreation and stormwater treatment.
