Bremerton seeks downtown traffic changes

Two of downtown Bremerton’s one-way streets could become two-way, pending City Council approval.

The Bremerton Public Works and Utilities department introduced a proposal at a Council study session Wednesday to convert Washington Avenue between Sixth and Second Street into a two-way passage. Second Street between Washington Avenue and Pacific Avenue would also have two directions of traffic, with the angled parking turning into parallel parking.

The plan proposed by Public Works says the traffic changes will better accommodate downtown development projects, such as new businesses, expected in the next few years.

Public Works previously proposed reversing one-way traffic on Fourth Street to flow east instead of west, but an open house seeking feedback on the move garnered no support.

The City Council will likely vote on the proposed changes at its Aug. 4 meeting. A timeline has yet to be set for the traffic changes.
