A 74-year-old Seabeck man pleaded not guilty Jan. 13 to animal cruelty despite admitting to King County sheriff’s deputies he had been raising fighting cocks.

Deputies found Godofredo J. Ramac, 74, when investigating a report of illegal cockfighting at the Muckleshoot Indian Reservation in August, according to court documents.

Ramac, who lives in the 6000 block of Seabeck Holly Road NW, fled with several other men when the deputies arrived and hid in nearby woods, but gave himself up and said he ran because he was scared, documents said.

At the time he had with him three gamecocks, and said he drove to the location to sell or fight the birds.

He also told deputies he raised the fighting birds, and had 60 at his residence, the documents said.

He was charged in King County Superior Court.
