KINGSTON — After the first set of play, it looked like the Kingston Buccaneers volleyball team was poised to earn its first victory of the season.
The Buccaneer faithful were in a frenzy as KHS won 25-23 in the first set of play against the visiting Olympic Trojans Thursday night. Unfortunately for KHS, Olympic (3-4 overall, 1-0 league) won the next three sets coming up with a 3-1 (23-25, 25-13, 25-17, 25-21) victory against the Buccaneers (0-5 overall, 0-1 league) in the first Olympic League match for both teams this year.
“We were unable to get the win but the girls played amazing,” said Buccaneers coach Lisa Roberts. “We have been working hard in practice and it showed during this game.”
Roberts said sophomore Jordan Tapp finished the contest with a team-high 14 assists.
“She stepped up on the court and became a leader for the team,” she said.
Junior outside hitter Anna Finlon finished with a team-high nine digs and five kills. Rachel Bishop added five kills as well.
“Anna is a huge part of our offense and defense,” Roberts said. “They both played the game with great intensity and motivated the rest of the team to play the same way. The girls played well together and gave it everything they had.”
The Buccaneers struggled in the serving department, Roberts said.
“Our team’s serving was not very consistent and we gave a lot of points away due to it,” she said.
Roberts said her team must improve in all facets of the game to have success against Olympic League opponent Port Angeles this Thursday in the Kingston High School gymnasium. Port Angeles currently boasts a 5-1 record.
“This week we are playing a really good team and I’m hoping to see the same intensity that I saw from the game (against Olympic) this week,” Roberts said.
