Hansville youth group stays busy

Published 11:00 am Monday, October 30, 2006

The Hansville Youth Group meets weekly at the Hansville Community Church and like any other youth group it is busy, noisy and very active! The group is sponsored by the Hansville Community Church under the direction of Pastor Greg Uvila and assisted by his wife Nancy.

Cindy Thompson, and Lois Jarnagin supervise the regular turnout of 10 to 15 young people ranging in age from 13 to 17 years old who show up to hang out with friends, participate in a short worship period, help plan future activities, and enjoy movies and games.

According to Thompson the primary purpose of the youth group is to have a time of the week where local youth know they can meet with friends, and parents know that they are meeting in a safe, fun, Christian learning environment.

In a recent survey of youth group members, it is evident they enjoy the break from regular home and school routine − some individuals have been part of the program for seven years!

Activities the group has shared include music concerts by popular Christian artists Mercy Me, Audio Adrenaline and Newsboys. Seasonal camp retreats are held in the winter with a long ski/snow weekend at The Firs near Mt. Baker, and in the summer the group travels to Lake Roosevelt in Eastern Washington to enjoy water activities. The group has also gone to Wild Waves, the Puyallup Fair, hockey and baseball games, played mini-golf, gone bowling, and came home in multi-colors after a trip of playing paintball.

The kids are also active in the community helping elderly residents in Hansville and Kingston with lawn and yard chores, and picking up litter alongside our local roads. Once a year, they travel to Seattle to help serve a meal at the Union Gospel Mission, and last year initiated a blanket drive for the homeless. On an international level, some members of the youth group have also been part of mission teams from HCC to Mexico and the Dominican Republic

New members are welcome to join the youth group. Drop by or call the Hansville Community Church office to receive the current activity schedule or request to be added to the newsletter mailing list.

The youth group presents Youth Sunday on Nov. 19 at the Hansville Communty Church. It will include a skit, music and video presentation about the Lake Roosevelt Camp trip last summer.
