It was an explosive, exciting and youthful year for Kitsap high school soccer.
With the South Kitsap run to the state championship Final Four and North Kitsap’s dive deep into the post-season, nearly all Kitsap contests during the year were competitive, to say the least.
After reviewing all of the Kitsap County teams’ barnburners and the few blowouts, the Kitsap News Group sports writers have compiled this list of the individual best of the best for 2006.
F — Dan Nelson, South Kitsap — Scored 11 goals and had three assists despite missing the first part of the season due to the state basketball tournament. Scored two or more goals four times during the regular season for a team that made the Final Four.
F — Cody Clark, Olympic — The Trojans’ leading goal scorer for the second consecutive season as just a sophomore, Clark was the centerpiece of an Oly offense that saw the squad finish just outside of the playoff picture. Clark scored nine goals and added two assists to lead the team in points as well.
F — Zach Sampson, North Kitsap — Stepping onto a Viking squad with a hefty 10-man senior class, the freshman Sampson proved his worthiness of a starting spot during preseason practice. When the season began, his game solidified and he was identified as one of the team leaders despite his age. Sampson led the Vikings in scoring with 11 goals on the season and also dealt out six assists for the NK assault.
M — Cade Mossman, South Kitsap — Led the team in regular season scoring with 10 goals and 18 assists for 28 points on a team that scored 75 goals. Was the team captain of a squad that made the Class 4A State Finals. A versatile player who played many different positions during the year.
M — Travis Gutierrez, South Kitsap — With 16 goals and seven assists in the regular season, was the second-leading scorer on the Bridge Division champion team. Moved around a lot to fill other positions as well.
M — Kyle Schoales, South Kitsap — Speedy and tough, scored eight goals and had seven assists during the regular season. Best in the league at throwing in the ball and at corner kicks and one of the league’s best and toughest defenders, played a variety of positions all season.
M — Ryan Simcic, Klahowya — Simcic, one of six Eagle seniors, led the team in goals with 11 and added a pair of assists, but more importantly, helped lead an Eagles squad that needed a go-to player on offense. While Klahowya couldn’t quite repeat last year’s success, Simcic never let his squad let down. His 11 goals were nearly half of the team total.
D — Tim Grey, South Kitsap — Despite playing just six regular season games because of transfer issues after leaving King’s West, Grey scored six goals and had five assists as a defender. The most physical player in the league and the most gifted, he changed the attitude for South and was a big reason for its success.
D — Steven Prevost, North Kitsap — North Kitsap senior Prevost was one of the Vikings’ most prominent leaders in 2006. He was also a portrait of flexibility. After spending most of his soccer career in the front field, NK coach Pat Stickney moved Prevost’s speed and tenacity to the defensive and celebrated the outcome of six shutouts on the season.
D — Noah Greenwald, Bremerton — The senior accounted for 29 percent of his team’s goal output as a defender, lettered all three years in high school, led the team as its captain this season and found himself on the all-district team for the second year in a row.
GK — Tony Sadler, South Kitsap — Posted nine shutouts and allowed just 11 goals in 15 regular season games. Allowed two or more goals just three times and led his team to the Final Four.
Coach of the year — Eric Bergeson, South Kitsap — Coached the Wolves to the Bridge Division title and into the State Finals despite not having the starting lineup he wanted for most of the year due to injury, illness, grades or transfer issues. Moved his guys around to fill the needs and still posted a 13-1 league record and an 18-2 overall mark heading into the last week of the season.
