Fastpitch gets deja vu-ed against South

POULSBO — April 13 and May 2 were remarkably similar days for the North Kitsap girls’ fastpitch team.
And definitely not in a way the Vikings (6-3 in league) would have liked.
On both those dates, North battled its county arch-rivals South Kitsap (10-0 league), with the match-up made more marquee by the fact that NK and SK occupy first and second in the Narrows Bridge division.
And on both those dates, North held a lead — on Monday, it was a 2-1 tally going into South’s final at bat in the top of the seventh — before seeing the league leading Wolves come from behind to hold onto what looks like the Narrows’ Bridge title.
“It was a toe-to-toe war,†said NK coach Dan Kolda of the game. “But the bottom line for the girls is that it’s an absolute heartbreaker.â€
North’s Melody Griffin hit a double and Shayla Urie added a hit in the bottom of the sixth to help score both NK’s runs. And Viking pitcher Rachael Kramer looked to be getting a win, with two outs and one runner on first in the top of the seventh.
A single by Stephanie Mott and a two-run double by Jievielyn Howard, however, put the Wolves up for good, 4-2. South pitcher Brittany Miller closed out the Vikings in the bottom of the seventh, capping a 13 strikeout game.
Coach Kolda tried to console his team after the loss, reminding them that Viking
wins this week against Central Kitsap Wednesday and Port Angeles Friday would all but wrap up a second place in the Bridge and a playoff spot.
“I gathered them up and tried to put it into perspective,†he said. “If we take down CK and PA this week … we’re in, sitting in second place.â€
