South Kitsap High School used its weapon of choice — the shootout — on Friday night to advance to the Washington State 4A soccer finals for the second time in three seasons.

With the score tied 1-1 with Marysville-Pilchuck at the end of regulation and two five-minute overtime periods of the semifinal matchup at Harry E. Lang Stadium in Lakewood, the Wolves got a clutch save in the from goalie Daniel Lathrop on the Tomahawks’ third of five shots.

After the two teams traded goals on the fourth kick, SK’s Justin Moore booted in the clincher as the Wolves emerged with a 5-3 shootout margin and a 2-1 win.

“Danny’s one of the best goalkeepers in the state,” said first-year SK Coach Michael Krug. “In these situations, we have all the confidence in the world putting the game in his hands.”

South had advanced to the semifinals by winning two of its previous three games by shootout.

“I don’t mind when they end like this,” Krug said.

The Wolves will face either Pasco or Woodinville in the finals at 7 p.m. on Saturday, also at Harry E. Lang Stadium.
