Weible’s two home runs lead NK to easy victory over Kingston

Campbell Weible’s two home runs led the way for the Vikings, as North Kitsap’s softball team handled rival Kingston 10-2 April 28 in Poulsbo.

The North Kitsap Vikings (11-2, 8-1 OL) beat the Kingston Buccaneers (8-6, 6-4 OL) 10-two April 28 at North Kitsap High School in Poulsbo.

Kingston (8-6, 6-4 in Olympic League) entered the matchup coming off a convincing win against Bremerton 18-2 April 23. NK (11-2, 8-1) is tied for first in league with Port Angeles. The Vikings entered the matchup coming off a win against Olympic 3-2 April 24.

“I think that we’re a strong team on paper,” Buccaneer coach Brenda George said. “Sometimes we just have to have that confidence in our game.”

Viking Charizma Fake and Buccaneer Summer Moore took the mound for the first inning. Fake forced three quick outs for the Vikings, whereas Moore walked home Reese Anderson after the Vikings were able to get the bases loaded in the bottom of the first, giving NK an early 1-0 lead.

Weible then smacked a left-center field home run off of Moore, increasing NK’s lead to two in the bottom of the third. Alivia Syverson followed that up with an outfield single and stealing second and third base with two outs, providing a spark for the NK offense.

“It’s nice because you’re happy that you helped your team out and scored some runs, especially in the end there when we were close,” Weible said.

NK added on to its lead in the bottom of the fourth off a sac fly from Anderson, driving in Maddy Syverson and extending the Vikings’ lead to 3-0.

Kingston was able to get on the board with a Julie Castillo home run in the top of the fifth, providing some life into the Buccaneer offense and cutting the Vikings’ lead to two. Fake was able to get the Vikings out of the inning and hold on to their lead.

Weible hit her second home run of the day, driving in two runs and increasing the Vikings’ lead to five at 7-2, their largest on the day. The Vikings scored seven total runs in the inning, giving NK a 10-2 lead entering the top of the seventh and ultimately sealing the game.

“They [the Vikings] came in with a mentality ‘okay, we’ve got to start getting our bats going,’” Viking coach Clay Blackwood said. “And instead of sitting back and letting things happen, they made things happen.”
