Vikings fall apart in final minutes

The North Kitsap girls basketball team fell to the Sequim Wolves 53-43 Dec. 19. Although the Wolves sit atop the league standings, the Vikings held their own until the final 10 minutes of the game.

Sophia Baugh pushed the tempo by scoring four of the 14 first-quarter points for the Vikings. In addition, Teegan Devries scored a couple of points and blocked a three-point attempt at the buzzer to give the Vikings a 14-7 lead after the first quarter.

North Kitsap started the second quarter scoring as Evelyn Beers got a layup. Sequim’s Hannah Bates snapped a six-minute scoring drought with a three-pointer to make it 16-10 Vikings.

Sequim’s Jelissa Julmist scored six unanswered points to tie the score. However, Coriana McMillan made a three to give the Vikings a slight lead. Despite trailing with a minute left, Sequim responded and went into halftime with a 22-21 advantage.

North Kitsap’s Jade Sunnenberg and Baugh picked up the first two baskets in the second half, giving the Vikings a 26-22 lead. Yet, Jolene Vaara and Julmist continued to respond and gave Sequim a 40-35 lead after three quarters.

North Kitsap fell apart in the fourth quarter. The Vikings turned the ball over in the backcourt and forced tough shots, being outscored 13-8.

Baugh finished with 12 points while Sunnenberg finished with seven.
