The team competed at the Narrows League state-qualifying tournament held at Spanaway and two athletes are going to state.

Mitch Woodside took fourth place with scores of 80 and 75 and Joey Duwe tied for ninth place with scores of 77 and 80.

State is at the Avalon Golf Course in Whatcom County May 20-21.

NK SPECIAL OLYMPICS SWIM TEAM

On May 3 the Special Olympic Swim Team traveled to Kelso and competed in the regional tournament against 12 other teams. In order to advance to state the swimmers had to place in the top two. All NK Vikings swimmers are making the trip to state, as they earned a multitude of golds and silvers.

Head coach Darla Sargent said this is the first time in more than 10 years that the entire team is going to state, as usually only a few make the trip.

The state competition is May 31 at the Federal Way Aquatic Center. Events range from a 15-meter water walk to the 800-meter freestyle swim.

NKHS ATHLETES RECOGNIZED FOR SCHOLASTIC ACHIEVEMENT

All eight NKHS spring sports teams have been recognized for their academic abilities by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association.

Teams receiving the Distinguished Scholastic Award for a varsity roster with a combined grade point average of 3.0 are: baseball, fastpitch, boys golf, girls golf, soccer and boys track and field.

Teams receiving the Outstanding Scholarstic Award for a varsity roster with a combined GPA of 3.5 or higher are: girls tennis and girls track and field.

“Congratulations to these student-athletes and their coaches for setting high expectations both on and off the field, court, course, track and pitch,” wrote NKHS Athletic Director Trish Olson in an e-mail.

NK SOCCER SELECT CLUB

The NK Explosion boys U-15 team opened its season with an explosion of victories at the Snohomish United Invitational May 9-11.

On Friday the Explosion defeated the Snohomish Black 6-2. On Saturday NK defeated the Evergreen Soccer Club 5-0 and later that day defeated the Northwest Nationals Blue 8-1. On Sunday in the semifinals match the Explosion beat Eastside White, 5-1 and in the finals round the Explosion shutout the Snohomish United, 4-0.

The boys play next at the Viking Cup in Poulsbo May 23-26.

CLUB FALL REGISTRATION

The 2008 NKSC Fall Recreational Soccer registration for players and coaches is now open for the Mod, U8-U11, and Full Field, U12-U19, age groups. NKSC will be introducing a new program for 5- and 6-year-olds, U6-U7, with experienced coaches and an emphasis on basic skill development, fun, and sportsmanship. LACROSSE SUMMER CAMP

The North Kitsap Lacrosse team is offering two summer camps for boys and girls entering third -12th grade.

The camps cover the skills of lacrosse, catching, throwing, cradling, checking, play of the game and rules. Individual skill work, drills and team competitions are an integral part of the camp. The camps are open to all regardless of residency. Camps run June 23-27. Sessions for third through eighth-graders is 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and session for 10th through 12th-graders is 4-7 p.m. The camps are located at Wolfle Elementary School. Registration is through Poulsbo Parks and Recreation. The deadline for registration is June 14. The fee for the camp is $60 plus a $30 refundable stick deposit and $50 refundable goggles deposit. Boys’ equipment will also be available for use with refundable deposits. All players must provide their own mouth guard and cleats. WOMEN’S SUMMER LACROSSE LEAGUE

The women’s summer lacrosse league has two sessions. The first is 5:30-6:30 p.m. for incoming third through eighth-graders. The second session is from 6:30-8 p.m. for players entering ninth grade and older. A skills clinic will run concurrently every week during the 5:30-6:30 p.m. time slot for new players wanting to try out the sport. The games are on Wednesday nights, June 25-August 13 at Wolfle Elementary. Registration is through Poulsbo Parks and Recreation. The deadline for registration is Saturday, June 23. The fee for the league and/or clinic is $50.
