Spartan boys cruise to 12-0 win on Senior Night

The Bainbridge Spartans boys soccer team showed out on Senior Night, cruising past Kingston 12-0 May 2 at home while remaining undefeated at 15-0.

The Spartans have already clinched the Olympic League title with a win over rival North Kitsap 4-3 May 1.

“We’ve got a lot of talented seniors,” Spartan coach Mark Nowak said. “Whatever product we put out on the field, we knew they were going to go out there and perform.”

Spartan forward Cruz Piland kicked off the scoring for both squads with an immediate goal at the 38-minute mark, giving the Spartans an early 1-0 lead.

Kingston Buccaneer defender Solo Tameilau had an opportunity to punch a goal in for the Bucs at the 20-minute mark, but could not find the right position to kick the ball in for a score.

The Spartans put up 10 goals in the first half, the most they have put up in an entire game since they beat Port Angeles 12-0 April 22.

“You know, we just have an immense amount of talent,” Nowak said. “Anybody can be the best player on the field at any time, and I think we saw that in the first half.”

Spartan sophomore midfielder Jaco Chalk scored a goal within the first five minutes of the second half, pushing Bainbridge’s lead to 11.

Nonetheless, Kingston held their own after the Chalk score, playing more aggressive defense and forcing some Spartan turnovers, not allowing a goal for a full twenty-five minutes.

Despite the improved defense, the Buccaneers could not get a score of their own, struggling to get the ball into Bainbridge territory for a majority of the second half.

“I thought they [Bainbridge] were really good sports, trying to keep the score down and letting other guys play forward,” Kingston coach Craig Smith said. “But they also took the load off, playing different guys.”
