South Kitsap’s youth AAU sixth-grade boys basketball team took home a championship

SPOKANE — South Kitsap’s youth AAU sixth-grade boys basketball team took home a championship this month at the state-wide tournament in Spokane.

The SKYAA Elite sixth grade boys team, coached by John Standridge and Dave Horton, had a great season, placing in the top three in six of the seven tournaments, winning three of them, and earning a trip to the state championship.

The tournament took place over three days from March 16 to 18 at various locales throughout the Spokane Valley.

SKYAA Elite took home a 53-32 win against Kelso on March 16. They then played twice on March 17, defeating Lakewood 40-19 and Chelan 66-42, sending them on to the championship game against Ephrata. The boys walked away with a big 32-point victory, winning 54-22 to capture the crown.

SKYAA’s Tyler Hansen also took home an individual award, winning the 3-point shooting contest for 12-year-olds.
