SK’s offensive explosion leads to easy win on Senior Night

The South Kitsap Wolves are looking to finish out the regular season strong, and they did just that on Senior Night April 29, pounding the Curtis Vikings 16-3 in an offensive showcase.

The Wolves (6-8) entered the matchup coming off losing a doubleheader against the Puyallup Vikings April 25, falling 12-2 in the first meeting and 11-0 in the second matchup.

“We always want to finish strong,” SK coach Bobby Lawrence said. “The SPSL is the toughest league in the state.”

SK starting pitcher Madison Bonilla was subbed out for Joci Lee at the beginning of the second inning. Lee forced three consecutive outs.

Lee helped out on the offensive side, too, hitting an RBI single to center field, scoring Audrey Wood and advancing Bonilla to third. The Wolves’ strong bottom half of the second inning continued with a 2-RBI Maleah Sawyers single to center field, increasing the Wolves’ lead to 4-0.

Sawyers smacked a deep double to center field, scoring Eva Spencer and increasing SK’s lead to nine entering the fourth inning.

“It was just our ball game [between Lee and Byrd],” SK catcher Ronan Byrd said. “We knew the defense had our backs, and it was just her and I out there.”

Lee loaded the bases in the top of the fourth with one out, but forced a strikeout and flyout to get the Wolves out of the inning unscathed.

Reagan Dale kicked the hitting off for SK in the bottom of the fourth and made it to third base off a Hannah Roebuck infield single. Karly Forsythe was able to advance home on a passed ball. The Wolves continued their strong offensive performance, rattling off consecutive hits and driving in an additional eight runs to increase their lead to 16-0.

Lee loaded the bases again in the top of the fifth and walked a Curtis runner home, giving the Vikings their first score of the game. An outfield error drove two more Curtis runners home.

“The last couple weeks, we’ve been riddled with injuries,” Lawrence said. “But you know what? We’re better for going through that. We have a next (girl) up mentality.”
