SK boys soccer loses opener 3-1 to 2A Seattle school

South Kitsap’s 4A boys soccer team lost its opening game of the season March 12 at home 3-1 to 2A school Evergreen of Seattle.

The Wolves ended last season with only one win and averaged 0.5 goals a game, a South Puget Sound League low while averaging a league-high 2.9 goals scored against per game.

“The mindset [going in] is to just mostly have fun, but also see if we can figure out what the team dynamics are going to be,” SK coach Bill Conley said.

Neither team could get on the board within the first 10 minutes of the game. The first shot on goal didn’t even happen until Evergreen tried one at the 35-minute mark. SK maintained an aggressive defensive mindset, forcing many turnovers near the middle of the field and initiating many slide tackles.

The Wolves’ defense continued to shine as freshman goalie Cole Meyers prevented an up-close-and-personal goal at the 14-minute mark.

The Wolverines scored at the 7:48 mark, giving Evergreen the first lead of the game at 1-0. The remainder of the half saw the Wolves continue to struggle to generate offensive momentum despite the amount of turnovers they were creating.

“Our defense was just locked in,” SK midfielder Ismael Perez Valle said. We were “just focused on getting the ball up the field, getting the ball out and not letting the ball through.”

Evergreen converted a free kick within the first six minutes of the second half, pushing its lead to 2-0.

Valle earned a penalty kick after running into a Wolverine at the 27:47 mark, generating the first goal of the game for the Wolves and trimming the lead to 2-1.

SK freshman defenseman Adler Medina earned another penalty kick at the 21-minute mark, but could not produce a goal. SK continued to push the ball into Evergreen territory, but failed to maintain possession. The Wolverines were able to put inscored again with 10 minutes remaining, leading to the final score.

SK upped the ante once again in the final minutes, attempting to get the ball into Evergreen territory quickly to score. SK received another penalty kick at the 6:25 mark, but failed to convert again.

“We have really strong defenders that have worked their way up,” Conley said. “Just an unfortunate night tonight.”
