It was a joyous night for South Kitsap as the Wolves baseball and softball teams will be heading to districts following opening round wins in their respective South Puget Sound League tournaments.
The baseball team beat Bonney Lake 10-5 at home May 6 in the first round of the tournament. The No. 7 seed Wolves will now host No. 8 seed Graham Kapowsin May 7 at 4 p.m. A win would give them a better seeding at districts.
The softball team also beat Bonney Lake 8-3 May 6 and will play Olympia May 8 for better seeding at districts.
“These guys knew that we had to come out today and compete in order to play in districts,” SK baseball coach Nick Kenyon said. “It took us a while to get going, but we got going and they got after it.”
In the baseball game, Brody Gadberry started on the mound for the Wolves, letting up a double in the top of the first but responded with three outs to get out of the inning.
Gadberry’s strong start to the game took a hit with an RBI single to center field, giving the Panthers an early 1-0 lead.
Right-fielder Carson Puryear contributed to the strong hitting performance the Wolves had in the bottom of the third inning, singling to left field and later hitting a 2-RBI triple to center field, giving SK a convincing nine-run lead.
“I was just thinking, you know, stay on top, be on time, and just be slow and controlled and be as explosive as I can with my hands,” Puryear said.
The Wolves made a pitching change in the top of the fifth, switching to Leehen Barnhart. Barnhart was quickly taken out of the inning after letting up consecutive hits and was replaced by Jordan Yashruti. Yashruti made quick work of the remaining Bonney Lake batters, getting three consecutive outs.
An SK error allowed another Panther to cross home plate, cutting SK’s lead to five by the end of the top half of the sixth inning.
Santiago Herrera served as the Wolves’ closer and got three quick outs to seal the win in the top of the seventh.
