Rice shines for BHS but NK netters dominate

North Kitsap defeated the Bainbridge Spartans 5-2 on the road Sept. 8.

Although the Vikings dominated throughout, Spartan star Brogan Rice shined light with an astounding victory against Indigo Gallagher Zapf.

Gallagher Zapf took control early on Rice’s home court, taking a 5-2 lead in the first set. However, Rice simplified his approach and locked in. Rice fired back multiple shots before tying it at 5-5. Gallagher-Zapf continued to battle sneaking away the first point in the tiebreaker. However, Rice responded, winning the set 7-6.

Rice’s momentum carried into the second set as he captured the first few games. But Gallagher-Zapf came back winning a few games to make it 5-2. In the seventh game of the set, Gallagher-Zapf had back-to-back double faults, leading to Rice’s 6-2 victory.

As for the other matches, North Kitsap’s Dayshawn Harper won his singles match after Bainbridge’s Aidan McLellan — stopped due to an arm injury in the second set. NK’s Reed Grant won his singles match 6-1, 6-1 over Kaden Lancaster.

In the doubles matches, the Vikings’ Ethan Gillespie and Mason Chmielewski won 6-1, 6-1, Spencer Gillespie and Justin Gallant won 7-5, 6-2, and Rowan Kehoe and Garner Hal won 6-4, 7-6.

Bainbridge’s Quinn Haley and Brodie Lawrence picked up the Spartans only other win 6-4, 6-4.

Ethan Gillespie and Mason Chmielewski won their doubles match 6-1, 6-1.
