North Kitsap faced North Mason in a soccer game that featured winds up to 20 miles per hour Oct. 27.
The winds were consistently going from the near-side endzone toward the far side, helping the Vikings earn a 10-0 victory. All of NK’s goals came in the first half, including multiple ones from 20 or more yards out.
The offensive production began defender Tyra Zetty took a free kick from the 50-yard line. The wind carried Zetty’s ball over several players before hitting the top of a North Mason defender’s head and sailing into the back of the net.
Midfielder Sydney Hogan scored her first goal of the night when she rifled a shot from 25 yards out in the 35th minute. A couple of minutes later, Fia Jagodzinske marched down the left sideline before crossing the ball to Ellie Young for the third goal. Evelyn Beers scored inside the 18-yard box to give North Kitsap a 4-0 lead.
As the wind continued, the long balls followed. Marissa Emmons, Jenna Clarke and Zetty all scored from around the 30-yard line within a two-minute span to boost the lead to 7-0 with 15 minutes remaining in the half. Hogan added one more long-distance goal, and Beers capped off the scoring with a breakaway in the final minutes of the half.
North Mason took one shot in the first half from a 30-yard free kick.
In the second half, North Mason earned a few more opportunities but failed to capitalize, despite having the wind advantage. On the other hand, the Vikings laid back and dominated the possession.
