What has been the Olympic High School girls soccer team’s strength for the better part of a decade could be its weakness in 2010: goalkeeping.

The Lady Trojans enter the season without former keeper Darrien Dorr, a three-year starter who became an all-league player before graduating in June. Pepper Fanua, another former all-leaguer, patrolled the net for four seasons before Dorr, who at one point in 2009 registered seven consecutive shutouts.

“We had one of the best goalkeepers in the area for the past three years and she’s going to have to be replaced,” said coach Steve Haggerty. “We are rebuilding on defense a little bit.”

Haggerty as of Tuesday had yet to name a starting keeper for the team’s opener against Central Kitsap High School on Sept. 7, but sophomore Jaime Berry is the frontrunner. Ashley Ulrey, currently listed on the junior varsity roster, is next in line, though she won’t be eligible for the opener.

Consider it goalkeeper by committee, at least for now. Olympic has eight non-league games before it opens the Olympic League schedule against North Kitsap High School Sept. 28.

“Having that many non-league games will hopefully prepare us to make a run at it when league competition starts,” Haggerty said. “It gives us a chance to prepare and see what’s going to work, and we’ll take it from there.”

Haggerty’s shuffling of the lineup will go beyond goalkeeper during the non-league schedule.

The team lost seven players to graduation, including Anndrea O’Leary, who now plays at the University of Toledo in Ohio, and some of the returnees will move positions.

Among them are junior Jalyn Halstead and sophomore Gabby Tyner, a select player. Both are expected to move from defense to midfield, though Tyner could end up playing anywhere.

Halstead, who also plays basketball, was a leading scorer last season.

“She’s got great vision,” Haggerty said. “She sees passes and is real good at getting to the ball.”

Also expected to make large contributions this season are Monica Lopez, a senior who missed half of 2009 due to injury, and fellow senior Raelynn Masters, who Haggerty said could see time at forward. Micaylla O’Leary, younger sister to Anndrea, and senior Megan Smith will see significant playing time, too.

“Other than that we are still raking some kids in,” Haggerty said.

Still, especially this early in the season, the lineup could change at any given moment.

“We’re going to put the lineup out there that gives us the best chance to win,” Haggerty said.
