North Kitsap High School junior Emily Gomez won the Gutcheck Wrestling Tournament at the Showare Center in Kent Jan. 3-4, which consisted of 192 schools, some from out of the state.
Gomez competed in the 140-pound weight class, winning three matches to secure the title. Gomez beat Kianna Gutierrez-Munoz of Hermiston High School, OR in the quarterfinals, Rubylove Koch of Curtis High School in the semifinals, and Cassidy Jones-Mowen of Liberty Bell High School in Okanogan County.
It was Gomez’s first time competing in the tournament since her freshman year when she took fourth. She was unable to compete in it last year due to a broken foot, said her dad Robert Gomez, who is also the coach.
Coach Gomez added that his daughter’s brothers wrestled in college and her oldest sister was the wrestling manager for NKHS, adding that they are “just a wrestling family.”
