NK girls beat Renton in overtime

NK plays W. Valley for a spot at state

North Kitsap shut out Renton for four minutes in overtime to come away with a 38-34 win in the 2A District 2/3 Girls Basketball Tournament Saturday at Mount Tahoma.

Evelyn Beers scored a bucket after grabbing an offensive rebound, and Jade Sunnerberg scored a layup on a fastbreak in overtime to seal the victory.

The Viking girls, seeded 16th, advance to a must-win game Feb. 26 at Central Valley a 6 p.m. against Spokane’s West Valley, the ninth seed, at regionals for a spot at state at the SunDome in Yakima March 2-5.

In a game fitting of the sixth seed (NK) and seventh seed, the teams traded leads throughout with neither having more than a few-point advantage.

After leading 21-18 at the half, the Vikings trailed after three quarters 29-28 despite buckets from Teegan DeVries, Maliyah Reed and Shelby Snider just before the buzzer.

Reed scored two inside buckets and Aywnna Selembo scored off a fastbreak for NK’s only points in the final quarter.

Renton had a chance to win but a free throw went in and out with 36.9 seconds left. NK had the ball with 18 seconds to go but could not get off a good shot.

To reach that game, last week North Kitsap lost to No. 3 seed Sammamish 40-34, but beat No. 15 seed Bremerton.

Evelyn Beers of NK gathers herself for a shot Saturday.
