The Bainbridge and North Kitsap boys soccer teams both earned 2A state quarterfinal victories May 24, setting up one last match between the two rivals in the state semifinals at 7 p.m. May 30 in Federal Way.
The Spartans have beaten the Vikings three times this season, twice in the regular season and most recently in the district championship game.
In the quarterfinals, the No. 1 seed Spartans beat No. 9 seed R.A. Long 5-2 at Bainbridge High School, while the No. 5 seed Vikings bested No. 4 seed Archbishop Murphy on the road 1-0.
NK got things going quickly, earning a score from senior Aaron Lopez within the first ten minutes of the match, giving the Vikings an early 1-0 lead.
After that, both teams struggled to find the back of the net, with the Vikings playing aggressive man-to-man defense and controlling the ball for the majority of the first half.
The Vikings held their one-goal lead over the Wildcats at the end of the first half.
Both teams continued to struggle offensively in the second half, with the defenses continuing to play tight man-to-man coverage.
NK could not put any more goals in the back of the net despite increased shot attempts, but NK continued to play strong defense, preventing any shots from getting into the back of the net.
NK held on for the win 1-0.
In the Bainbridge match, R.A. Long quickly scored to give the Lumberjacks a 1-0 lead.
Nonetheless, the Spartan senior Finley Reynolds put in a header into the back of the net to tie the game at 1 apiece. Abe O’Connell and Cruz Piland then followed suit with goals of their own two minutes apart to give the Spartans a 3-1 lead.
The Lumberjacks responded by putting a free kick in the back of the net to cut the deficit to 1, but before halftime, Spartan Oliver Morrison scored to make the score 4-2.
Jazz Epstein of Bainbridge added a second-half goal to secure the win.
