The North Kitsap Vikings and Bainbridge Spartans performed well at the 2A state tennis tournament at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle May 23-24, with both teams earning top finishes in singles and doubles.

Viking Teegan DeVries, who was undefeated on the season, finished third in girls singles, going 3-1 in the tournament. She had a tough test in the quarterfinals, narrowly beating Sophie Knutson of Aberdeen in three sets, before losing in the semifinals to Rhoda Wang of Pullman in two sets 6-1, 6-1. Wang ended up winning the tournament, marking her third state championship in singles. DeVries bounced back by beating Cece Combs of Bainbridge to finish third.

Annabelle Waldman of Olympic finished eighth following a 2-2 showing.

In girls doubles, Malia Lemieux and Elle Schuchman of Bainbridge finished third after going 3-1 in the tournament. Spartans Abby Schnee and Elsa Drugge finished 2-2.

”It was an incredible journey watching all these girls throughout the season and then their performance at state,” Bainbridge coach Mary McCombs said. “I felt their team spirit stood out almost more than anything, and I couldn’t be prouder. The way they supported each other, pushing through tough matches…was quite an achievement.”

In boys doubles, North Kitsap Vikings Grady DeVries and Spencer Gillespie finished sixth. They won their first two matches to advance to the semifinals before losing their next two. Justin Gallant and Mason Repp of NK finished seventh after going 2-2.
