College: BI netter commits, grad starts in net

Isabelle Prentice, one of many talented seniors on this year’s Bainbridge High School volleyball team, has made her college commitment.

Prentice, a top-notch outside hitter and defender, will play next fall at D’Youville College, a Division 2 private school in Buffalo, N.Y.

As a junior, Prentice led Bainbridge with 95 kills in 12 matches, finished second on the team with 134 digs and recorded 12 aces. The Spartans finished with a 7-5 record.

At D’Youville, Prentice said she will focus on her biology major with a path toward pre-med in addition to competing for the Saints in the East Coast Conference. The small campus atmosphere combined with strong academics made the choice to attend D’Youville and accept a scholarship to play there an easy one. “I really wanted that small-knit community because that’s something I have on the island,” Prentice said.

Prentice also had the opportunity to play at the high school nation level with her club team, Da Kine, based in University Place, and has featured several of the West Sound’s top players in recent years. That experience has helped her get off to a good start in 2021 as she been one of the key players in Bainbridge’s 3-0 start. Prentice recorded 11 kills in a recent three-set win over Kingston and also turned in a solid performance in victories over North Mason and Bremerton. “I think that really prepared me for this season and for college as well,” Prentice said.

Meanwhile, a 2020 BHS graduate started his first soccer game at goalie for Drake University recently against Bradley.

Quinn Millerd, a 6-foot-5 redshirt freshman, was even pictured on ESPN.

Drake won the game 2-1. Bradley took 11 shots, four on goal. Millerd had three saves. Drake led 1-0 at intermission.

Drake improved to 4-1, while Bradley fell to 1-5.

Of Millerd, Drake coach Gareth Smith said, “”A big time performance and debut from Quinn Millerd in goal. His hard work and preparation over the last year has prepared him well, and he made some important saves throughout the game.”
