Area high school students returned to the classroom Wednesday ready to hit the books following winter break, but for Central Kitsap athletes, it also was time to hit the pool and the mats.
Central Kitsap’s boys swim and dive team edged Tacoma’s Foss Falcons on Thursday, 94-86, with Cougar Seth Parker logging yet another state-qualifying swim.
Central Kitsap won just five of the meet’s 12 events, but depth fueled the win as Parker met another state standard with his time of 2 minutes, 4.96 seconds in the 200-yard individual medley.
Strong on the relays, the Cougars were able to swim to wins in the 200 medley relay, featuring Parker, Kyle Bonnell, Joe Phillips and David Richardson, won their race in 1:49.75 while the 400 free squad of Richardson, Bonnell, Parker and Tyler Hirata won its race with a time of 3:37.06.
Hirata was a winner in the 200 free, logging a time of 2:01.83 while Jeremy Torres’ time of 1:12.47 took the 100 breast.
As for the Cougar grapplers, who were busy during the break at the Pacific Coast Championships in Vancouver, CK returned to Narrows League action by topping Stadium 49-21 in a road meet Thursday.
Trevor Stanburg, CK’s only placer at Pac Coast after taking eighth at 199 pounds, earned a 17-2 technical fall to lead the way.
At Pac Coast, CK was 30th of the 32 scoring teams. Ethan Beck (125), Kent Manalo (140), Chad Massida (152), Caleb Hendon (160) and Mike Crowely (171) all logged at least one victory at the tournament however, which Graham-Kapowsin won.
As for Stanburg’s tournament, he began with a pin against WF West’s Wade Phillips in 3:57.After falling to Dominic Sepe of Ridgefield, the eventual fifth-place finisher, Stanburg rebounded with a close 9-7 edging of Snohomish’s Derek Van Whye.
Next, Stanburg pinned McKay (Salem, Ore.) High School’s Tony Guerrero in 2:28. Another victory via pin fall against Cody Woods, the No. 9 ranked 4A wrestler in the state at the weight out of Heritage, in 2:27 assured Stanburg of a podium spot.
After Graham-Kapowsin’s Travis Metcalf pinned Stanburg in 1:50, Stanburg faced off against Auburn-Riverside’s Mike Turner for seventh and eighth place. Turner won with a pin in 3:33.
CK’s grapplers will host Lincoln Tuesday in a Narrows League duel meet before hosting the 31st Central Kitsap Matman Classic next Saturday, which will feature some of the top teams and wrestlers in the state.
Boys basketball
Both Central Kitsap and Olympic’s boys hoops squads were active during the break.
For Central Kitsap, that meant topping Shelton in a non-leaguer last Saturday 52-36.
After an even start at 11-11 through the first, CK (10-1) opened up a small lead at 25-20 heading into the half.
A third quarter fueled by defense however made the difference, as CK outscored the Highclimbers (0-7) 15-4 in the frame.
Cougar Brandon Durham led the way with 25 points for CK, which hosts Lincoln at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Results of last night’s road game with Gig Harbor were unavailable at press time.
For their break, the Trojans (2-6) met with Yakima’s Eisenhower in a non-league, falling 60-43 despite a large push.
Eisenhower was led by the brothers Elmo, with Taylor scoring 16 to Jared’s 12.
Joey Johnston scored 17 to lead Olympic while Larry Dixon added 12. The Trojans hosted Bremerton last night, but results were unavailable at press time.
The Trojans host Peninsula next at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Girls basketball
Olympic’s girls had a non-leaguer last Friday, using a strong opening quarter to ride out a 49-38 win at home against Aberdeen.
The Trojans jumped out early against the Bobcats, leading 11-2 through one quarter, a lead that would hold the rest of the way through some fluctuations.
Shawntell Bradford was on fire for Olympic, scoring a game-high 22 points, while teammate Nicole Buhl joined her in double figures with 12.
Oly’s girls also played Bremerton last night, but results were unavailable at press time.
