In an action-packed week the Bremerton boys soccer team split four games, beating Klahowya and North Mason while falling against North Kitsap and Kingston.
The Knights posted a combined 13 goals in the two victories, including nine in a 9-1 dismantling of North Mason on Monday. Franco Garcia, Matt Olson and Brendon Stebor all scored twice against NM, while Alex Membrere, Ibrahim Danladi and Ritchie Danskin added one goal apiece.
Garcia added two more goals in the loss to Kingston and with 13 goals and 31 totals points on the season, continues to lead the Olympic League in scoring.
But despite Garcia’ hot foot Kingston prevailed, converting a penalty kick in the 58th minute to break a 2-2 tie and earn a 3-2 win.
“It was a heartbreaker,” Lund said of the Kingston loss, his team without key midfielder Matt Olson.
“He’s our setup guy. He gets goals and assists,” Lund said of Olson, who was out of action for personal reasons. “We missed him in the middle third of the field.”
Now 5-7 overall and 4-4 in league play, BHS is fourth in the Olympic League with four games left on the regular season schedule.
And while reaching the postseason now appears a stretch — the Knights would have to beat Olympic and Port Townsend, each with only one loss — the team is in position to better last year’s record of 6-10, a challenge Lund issued his team before the beginning of the season.
“I’m not sure how things are going to shake out,” Lund said of the team’s playoffs hopes. “I at least want to improve on last year’s record.”
BHS hosts Central Kitsap tonight at 6:45 p.m. in the last home game of the year, then will travel to Olympic for a 6:45 p.m. kickoff Tuesday.
Baseball
The Knights were rained out yet again on Monday, missing a scheduled game against Sequim. The team did, however, get a game in against Port Angeles Tuesday. PA earned the victory, 8-2, jumping out 6-1 and never looking back. Eli Olson, Troy Miles and Scott Burt all chipped in with a hit and Noel Frederick hit a home run.
“The Knights played a good game,” BHS coach Ken Plowman said of his players. “They had guys on base; with a couple of timely hits it would have been a really close game.”
The Knights (2-10 overall, 2-8 league) travel to Port Townsend Monday and host North Mason at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
Tennis
The Lady Knights netters continue to roll through the Olympic League, earning a 4-3 victory last week in a rescheduled match against Klahowya.
Mayara Simone and Sandy Schmidt teamed up in No. 1 doubles, sweeping Misty Noster and Melodie Noster 6-0, 6-2. The Lady Knights also captured No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 doubles, with Courtney Wasserburger and Krystle Membrere winning 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 2 slot.
Klahowya swept singles action as Paige Mitchell, Megan Arriola and Sarah Streuker all fell.
The Lady Knights are back in action today at the South Kitsap Invite, with action beginning at 8 a.m., and host Olympic at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
Fastpitch
Troubles continue to mount for the Bremerton fastpitch team, losing two more games in shutout fashion last week. The Lady Knights dropped a Tuesday game against Olympic, 18-0, and a Thursday game against Port Angeles 10-0. Both games were called in the fifth under the “10-run” rule.
BHS looked to earn its first victory of the season yesterday against Kingston. Results were not available at press time. The team travels to Port Townsend Monday, then hosts North Mason at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
