Need for better mental health services

We’ve all heard about the opioid epidemic and the need for better mental health services. But did you know that here in Kitsap County we’re actually doing something about it?

In 2013, the Kitsap County commissioners established a new 0.1 percent sales tax devoted to mental health, chemical dependency and therapeutic court programs. The tax now brings in more than $4 million annually and is used for drug court, school counseling, crisis intervention and many other services.

The League of Women Voters of Kitsap thinks this is a good time to look at the tax and how it is working. The public is invited to the free program, A Progress Report on the Behavioral Health Tax, from 9:30 to noon March 14 at the Eagles Nest, 1200 Fairgrounds Road NW, near the county fairgrounds.

Retired Superior Court Judge Anna Laurie will moderate the event. Speakers will include Kitsap County Human Services Director Doug Washburn, Citizens Advisory Committee Chairman Richard Daniels and Kitsap Connect Coordinator Robin O’Grady.

Please plan to attend and bring your questions to our speakers. For more information about this program or the League of Women Voters of Kitsap, see our website at www.lwv-kitsap.org.
