Steven J. Shawley, age 79 of Suquamish, Washington, passed away on March 6, 2023.
Steve was born on October 23, 1943 in Seattle, Washington to Elaine and Ray Shawley. He moved to Bainbridge Island in 1951 and attended school until graduating in 1961. Steve was active in sports lettering in both basketball and football. After high school he attended Olympic College and the University of Washington studying both accounting and philosophy.
Steve spent many years living on Lake Union in a houseboat. While in college he would spend his summers fishing in Southeast Alaska with Carl McLean. Some of his fondest memories were those fishing trips.
Steve is best known as a longtime business owner in Winslow. He bought Bainbridge Floorcovering from Burns McCroskrie and operated the store for 42 years. Working beside him for over 25 years was his longtime friend and store manager, Judy Dulay. Steve and Judy closed the store in 2014.
Steve loved cats and dogs. Many of you will remember Sophie, the store cat that adopted Steve. His favorite dog was Lucy. Mike and Lucy would stop by every day for a visit in Suquamish for several years. It was the highlight of Steve’s day especially over the past two years.
Steve had a gruff exterior, but inside he was a kind and generous man, who loved his friends and family. He will be remembered for his great laugh and generous spirit. Steve loved fishing, taking many fishing trips with his friends, long drives down the coast, March Madness and time spent with his music.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Ray and Gene. He is survived by his daughter Tamara (Steven) Reames and four grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.
An open house to remember Steve will be held on April 1,2023 from 1-4 PM at the American Legion Hall located at 7880 NE Bucklin Hill Road, Bainbridge Island, WA.
