This is a delayed announcement due to COVID 19 and other circumstances. Shirlee “Beth” Homan-Ross passed away due to liver cancer at Desert Regional Hospital, Palm Springs, May 1st, 2020, at 6 PM. Desert Regional made an exception so Emily, her only daughter, could be with her in her last few hours. We want to thank Desert Regional for making this exception. Beth was born to Franklin K. Homan of Maywood, NE, and Margaret G. Homan of Hollywood, CA in Burbank, CA, where she graduated from John Burroughs High School, honing interests in cheerleading and dance. While attending L.A. Valley College, Beth worked at Burbank’s NBC Studios as a “runner” delivering scripts to news anchors. She then pursued her dream of East Coast broadcasting, becoming a producer for WABC, WCBS (New York), and CBS News (Washington D.C.), notably working on the groundbreaking overnight newscast, CBS News Nightwatch. One project took her to the top of the Brooklyn Bridge; another involved teaching comedian Steve Martin to rollerblade. Known for creativity, swag, and intelligence, Beth was an entrepreneur who started and sold small businesses using pluck, humor, caffeine, and a “gift of gab.” When Beth lived in Washington, DC, she started, as she put it, a “bipartisan basket company” called the Washington Basket Company, quickly landing clients such as the White House. She was known for memorable promotional baskets and inaugural invitations. Beth loved the energy of political events, and her skills did not go unnoticed; Bill Clinton even wrote her a thank you card! On a trip to British Columbia, Beth spotted Bainbridge Island from a sea plane and knew instantly she wanted to live there. After finding the perfect yellow house in Eagle Harbor, Beth moved her family and the Washington Basket Company to Bainbridge Island. Beth opened the family home for voice, piano, and violin students when a fire burned the Bainbridge Island Music School. Beth used her promotional skills again to assist the Ovation Musical Theatre on Bainbridge Island. Beth is also remembered for her spontaneous generosity at Ordway Elementary School because she often brought treats to the kids, and she designed the class of 2008’s eighth grade banquet. Later, the California-girl-at-heart settled in Palm Springs and lived the rest of her life there. Beth went back to school and became a certified esthetician, going on to create her own beauty company, “Beth’s Beauty Bus”. She enjoyed hosting spa facial parties, dancing with her friend Dolores, and going to church with neighbors from Sahara Park. Recently Beth was baptized at Desert Chapel. Along with infectious laughter, Beth is also remembered for loving bright colors, hummingbirds, retro décor, morning bagels, Peet’s Coffee, and gourmet cooking. She is survived by a devoted daughter, Emily Everson Ross of Seattle, WA; a brother, Benjamin Homan (Annette) of Scottsdale, AZ; loving cousins, Lauret and Suzan Ballsun of Seattle, WA; and Emily’s father, David S. Ross of Bainbridge Island, WA. We invite you to light a candle or say a prayer any day at 6 PM in her honor.
