Richard Romane

Richard R. Romane died peacefully at Emeritus Oaks of Silverdale on Dec. 21, 2007 in the presence of his wife Anita. The Silverdale resident was 89.

Mr. Romane was born on Oct. 5, 1918 in Eugene, Ore., to Elizabeth (Erdman) Romane and Harry B. Romane. He married Anita Bates in Eugene on Nov. 17, 1940. They had one daughter, Diane, born May 1, 1943.

Mr. Romane worked for a short time as a brakeman for the Southern Pacific Railroad.

He joined the U.S. Army and was sent to Japan in 1947 where, after serving in the military, he received an honorable discharge and worked as deputy director, transport operations, U.S. Army Transportation Command, Japan. In October 1960, he was appointed a reserve commissioned officer in the grade of major in the Army of the United States. In total, he served the U.S. Army for 34 years, all of those years in Japan. He was responsible for all troop and material shipments throughout the Far East.

He retired in April 1977 to the state of Washington.

Mr. Romane was preceded in death by his twin brother Albert Romane and his granddaughter Catherine Granto.

He is survived by his wife Anita Romane; daughter Diane Horst of Bremerton; brother Stevon Romane of Springfield, Ore.; grandsons Joseph Granto and Mark Granto of Florida; great-grandsons Michael Granto and Daniel Granto; and nephews Randal Collier and Dave Collier of Oregon.

A memorial service is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Bremerton Seventh-Day Adventist Christian Church.

Memorial donations can be made to the Shriner’s Childrens Hospital in Spokane.
