Ray Quinn

Ray H. Quinn, 96

Ray H. Quinn died Oct. 22, 2003 in Shelton. He was 96.

Quinn was born in Columbus, Mont., in 1907. He and his family moved to Seattle when he was 9.

Quinn began working on tug boats at the age of 15 and became a captain at 19.

He spent his lifetime serving on tugs for Carey Davis, Puget Sound Tug & Barge and Foss Tugs. in 1954, he became a Puget Sound Pilot until his retirement in 1974.

In his maritime career of more than 50 years, he commanded many types of vessels and obtained a master’s unlimited tonnage license. He went around the world on two Victory ships in 1946. During World War II, he ferried supplies for the army in Alaska.

Quinn enjoyed 30 years of retirement and 68 years of marriage to his wife Gertrude.

He is survived by his wife Gertrude; nephews Raymond Halstead of Sequim and George Hurst of New York, N.Y.; nieces Jackie McCollum of Poulsbo, Suzanne Hurst of New York, N.Y.; Mary Hagen of Shelton, Patricia Desmond of Indianola; and other nieces, nephews, and grand and great-nieces and nephews.
