Mary Margaret Mathisson

January 22, 1965 – May 1, 2025

Mary graduated from Bainbridge Island High school in 1983 along with many lifelong friends. She graduated from Whitman College, studied in France, traveled throughout Europe, and went to Russia. She earned her master’s degree and taught French at the University of Oregon. She left teaching to move to Alaska and create a new life.

Mary adventured to New Zealand, learned how to build boats, and sailed to Hawaii on an all-woman crew. She met her husband Tony at the Boatyard Timeless in Seattle, and they lived aboard their sailboat Chance in Alameda California for many years. Mary was independent, curious, and loved deeply. She loved reading and writing and found joy in expressing herself. She made friends everywhere she went and nurtured those friendships throughout her lifetime. Mary brought people together during her life and is still bringing people together now. That is the gift of Mary.

Mary’s celebration of life will take place at the Stone Chapel on Saturday June 7 at 2:00 pm. The Stone Chapel is located at 22272 Foss Road NE Poulsbo WA 98370.

She was the beloved daughter of Charles William (Bill) and Bertha Margaret Mathisson and big sister to Russell John Mathisson. She was preceded in death by her loving Grandmother Mary and Grandfather John Mathisson, and her Grandmother Martha Ward and Grandfather Edwin Larson. Also preceded in death by her Uncle Edwin Larson and her Aunt Mary Mackensie.

She is survived by her husband Anthony (Tony) Oliver, her parents, her brother, her Aunt Carol Tolson, and numerous cousins and second cousins.
