Mary Ellen Rainier Olsen

November 24, 1992 – August 2, 2018

Mary Ellen Rainier Olsen (“Mel”) went home to Jesus one year ago, August 2, 2018. Mel contended mightily with bi-polar disorder for over five years. She was a loving daughter, sister, aunt, and friend, known for her sharp wit and tender heart. Raised from infancy in Fort Ward, she attended public schools on Bainbridge and during high school years ferried daily to Seattle to attend Seattle Central Community College. Islanders knew her as a barista at New Rose Cafe. For the last five years of her life Mary Ellen was a meticulous and indefatigable craftswoman working for the family business. Her key refrain: “What’s next, Dad?”

Mel was celebrated at a Mass of the Resurrection at Saint Cecilia Church and is laid to rest at Port Blakely Cemetery. Mary Ellen is survived by her parents (James and Mary), her brothers Charles and Crosby (Amy Butler), nephews Arlo and Wilder, niece Eleanora, and sister Margaret Ellen (Luke). She was preceded in death by her firstborn infant sister Margaret Victoria (d. 1981). She is dearly missed. We love you, Mary Ellen.
