Leonel (Lee) Stollar passed away at his home on Bainbridge Island, Washington, on April 1, 2019. Lee was born in Oroville, California in 1930, and graduated from Oroville High School in 1948. He attended the University of California at Berkeley graduating in 1953. After serving in the Navy, he returned to UC Berkeley as an employee in 1956, rising to the position of Laboratory Manager/ Reactor Supervisor for the Nuclear Engineering Lab in 1967. In 1970, Lee accepted a position at NASA Ames Research Center, in Mountain View California, as Special Assistant to the Director for Facility Operations. In 1983, following a major accident in the largest wind tunnel at Ames, Lee was appointed Project Manager of the recovery effort reporting to the Center Director. This large wind tunnel facility was ultimately known as the “National Full-Scale Aerodynamics Complex” and was recognized as a world class aeronautical research tool. Lee headed the project office responsible for the facility until his appointment as Chief Office of Safety, Reliability, and Quality Assurance in 1987. While at Ames Lee participated in the Ames Ski Club. He was recognized for being one of the Center’s champion Blood Bank Donors. Lee was the recipient of many awards, including the Ames Honor Award for Engineer in 1988 and NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal 1989. Lee retired from Ames in March 1991. Lee and his wife, Ilse, moved to Bainbridge Island Washington in 1991. Lee was a long time docent and volunteer at IslandWood a non-profit environmental learning center on the Island. Lee was also a very fine wood turning artist, showing his bowls at several Bainbridge Island Studio Tours and also auctioning some of his work to raise funds for IslandWood. Lee and Ilse also participated in Bainbridge Ometepe Sister Island Association. On Ometepe, Lee helped design and implement water supply systems for the island’s residents. He also encouraged and facilitated the manufacturing of marimbas (Nicaragua’s national instrument) by local youth to be used in student music programs. Lee is survived by his son Andreas Stollar of Seattle, Washington, and his daughter, Anina Stollar of Loleta, California. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Lee’s memory to IslandWood.
