Kathryn (Kay) Irene Pettersen

March 30, 2019

Kathryn (Kay) Irene Pettersen passed away on March 30, 2019 at the age of 93.

Kay grew up in small town Carnation, Washington, and had quite a shock when her family moved to Seattle just before her senior year in high school. She went from her tiny rural school to spend a year at Roosevelt High, then the largest high school in the state. She survived and went on to the University of Washington for three years.

Kay met LeRoy “Pete” Pettersen, who was just home from World War II, at a dance in Bellingham and they were soon married at a church in Carnation. Kids came next: Gary, Glen, Chris and Eric. Pete and Kay plus their growing family moved to ever bigger homes in Eugene, North Seattle, Shoreline and Edmonds.

Tragedy was averted when Kay got tuberculosis and was confined in Firland Sanatorium. After a year there she recovered and was back to being supermom to four kids. When half the kids were grown and out of the house Kay returned to the University of Washington to earn a teaching degree. The nearest place she could find a teaching job was in Chimacum on the Olympic Peninsula. This was really a lucky choice as Pete and Kay bought an abandoned schoolhouse in Shine, just across the Hood Canal Bridge. They restored it and it became the home for all family gatherings, otherwise known as Kay’s Resort. They spend 30 years hosting kids, grandkids and friends to great meals, fires on the beach and holiday celebrations.

Pete passed away in 2006 and Kay moved to Vineyard Lane on Bainbridge Island. After several years there the next move was Madison House, where she made many new friends.

She is survived by her four kids Gary (Margreet), Glen (Cathy), Chris (Gary), Eric (Kathy), her sister Joyce Byrd, 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
