John Foster Mack

June 10, 1929 - July 4, 2021

Passed away peacefully at Penrose Key Nursing Facility on July 4, 2021 at the age of 92.

John was born in Spokane Washington on June 10, 1929, to Clayton “Tom” Mack and Velma (Foster) Mack. He grew up playing sports, especially football. He played for Lewis and Clark High School. He accepted a football Scholarship to the University of Idaho where he played center for the Vandals. John received his Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education in 1952.

In college, John joined the ROTC and was called to Active duty in September 1952 as a Second Lieutenant. He completed Jump School in 1953 at Fort Benning, Georgia and became a Paratrooper. John served one year in the Korea War as a squad leader and was promoted to First Lieutenant. John was Honorably Discharged in 1955.

John lived and worked many years in Seattle and had a summer cabin at Rolling Bay on Bainbridge Island. In 1996 he married Marianne D. Glad and they moved to the Crystal Springs area of the island, where they lived together for 23 years before moving Gig Harbor in 2019. John was an avid Golfer and a longtime member of the Wing Point Country Club.

John loved to watch football and followed Idaho, WSU, and the Seahawks. John loved dogs and was a generous donor to the Humane Society and ASPCA. He also loved home improvement and working in the tool shed. John was known for his smile, his great conversation and was gentleman throughout his life.

John was proceeded in life by his parents Tom and Velma, his first wife Shirley Nutter Mack and his Brother Larry Mack

John is survived by wife, Marianne Mack. Although John had no children, He was the proud Grandfather to Eli Glad (Angie), Liam Glad (Nicolette), Heath Mitchell, Meredith Perez (Chris), Skyler Mitchell, Hanna Glad, Madeline Glad. John was also Great grandfather to David Perez. All of whom called him “Papa John”.

John was also Uncle to Rebecca (Darryl) Dugan, Julia (Rob) Caldwell, Mari (Gary) Dark, David Guckel, Steve Guckel and Susan Guckel.
