Joe Mentor Sr., 70

Kitsap County businessman Joe Mentor died, Sept. 1, 2003 in Agassiz, B.C. He was 70.

He was born Aug. 25, 1933 in Covington, La., to Joe and Seleta (Bridges) Mentor. Mentor’s family settled in Central Kitsap on a farm off Olympic View Road in 1935. He was an Eagle Scout. He graduated from CK High School in 1952 and from the University of Washington with a business degree in 1956.

He married Juanita Arnold in 1989.

Mentor was a real estate developer throughout Kitsap County for more than five decades. He held a seat as a state legislator for four years starting in 1968 in “The Tidelands District” that stretched from Manette to Island County.

For several years in the 1970s, he published “The Kitsap Journal.”

He was past president of the Washington State Homebuilder’s Association. He served on the board of trustees of Olympic College, including a term as chairman. He enjoyed politics, attending garage sales and attending family events.

Mentor is survived by his wife Juanita (Arnold) Mentor of Tracyton; sons Joe (Marie) Mentor Jr. of Seattle, James Mentor of Sausalito, Calif. and Ryan Lindstrum of Silverdale; daughters Kari (Christian) Lindstrum Garis of Seattle, Jennifer (Derek) Mentor Mills of Port Orchard, Judy (Jeff) Mentor Eagleson of Silverdale and Kate Anderson of Seattle; brother Louis (Paulette) Mentor of Bremerton; sisters Brenda (Bob) Dietz of Tacoma, Joyia (David) Rubens of Silverdale, Sandra Reynolds of Athens, Ga., and Ramona (Russ) Childers of Port Orchard; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service for Mentor is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6 at the Silverdale Lutheran Church on Ridgetop Drive. A celebration of his life will follow from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Kitsap Golf and Country Club in Chico.

The family requests memorials be sent to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Northwest Chapter, 1200 6th Ave., No. 605, Seattle, WA. 98101. Donations may also be made to a newly formed Joe Mentor Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Westsound Bank, 9960 Silverdale Way N.W., Silverdale, WA. 98383. The scholarship will benefit college-bound students from Central Kitsap High School.
