Irwin C. Shotwell, Jr

Nov. 18, 1930 - Jan. 8, 2019

Irv passed away on Jan. 8, 2019 after a ten year battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his son, Timothy James Shotwell. He is survived by the love of his life, his wife, Jill Gawley of 64 years; daughter, Julie (Val) Argyle; and his grandson, Ian Argyle. Irv was born in Camas, Washington on Nov. 18, 1930 and grew up in Aberdeen, Grays Harbor County. His interest in track and field athletics began at Aberdeen Junior High School and later got his initial football training from Coach Chuck Semancik at Weatherwax High School.

Irv proudly served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, and returned to the University of Washington. He was a member of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. After graduating from the University of Washington, he was employed by Aluminum Company of America as an Industrial Engineer. This led eventually to being president of a small air pollution control company in Phoenix, AZ.

Upon retirement in 1995, Irv and his wife returned to Washington State. He spent the next 12 years employed as a track coach, both in the Shelton School District and North Kitsap School District. The last four years of his coaching involvement was spent as a volunteer coach at Kingston High School, coaching football summer conditioning and track. Irv really enjoyed working with kids, helping them develop their athletic abilities, setting and achieving goals, and coping with adversity. Throughout his coaching time, Irv found personal validation and deeper meaning from his coaching involvement.

At Irv’s request, there will be no memorial service. A family celebration of life has been held by the family. An online memorial can be seen at www.poulsbomortuary.com
