Irene M. Nilsen, 83
Irene M. Nilsen of Poulsbo died Jan. 14, 2004 in Bremerton. She was 83.
Nilsen was born to William H. and Ruth (Richards) Haller in Port Ludlow on Aug. 18, 1920.
She married Carl Oscar Nilsen on Jan. 21, 1939 at the Kingston Christian Church.
Nilsen graduated from North Kitsap High School in 1937.
Nilsen worked at the General Mercantile in Port Gamble, where she met her husband. After marriage, the couple worked together to establish their family business known as “The Brothers.” They retired in 1985 but the business still thrives as Nilsen’s Appliance and The Brothers Powersports.
The Nilsens were instrumental in forming the first volunteer fire and ambulance service in the North End. Irene Nilsen was one of the first volunteers to drive the ambulance in Kingston and was listed in “Who’s Who of Kitsap County History” for her accomplishment.
Nilsen was a life member of the Sons of Norway and loved to golf and travel. She was also a member of First Lutheran Church and the Kitsap Golf and Country Club and was active in the Ladies Aid and Orthopedic Guild.
Nilsen is survived by her sons Roger (Becky) Nilsen of Mesa, Ariz., Bruce (Lynda) Nilsen of Poulsbo and Jeff (Diana) Nilsen of Bremerton; brother Gene Haller of Pasco; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Carl Oscar Nilsen, parents William H. and Ruth (Richards) Haller and brothers William and Robert.
Visitation will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 17 and Jan. 19 at The Stone Chapel at Cherry Grove in Poulsbo. A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Jan. 20 at First Lutheran Church in Poulsbo.
A private family graveside service and interment will take place at First Lutheran Church.
