Glenn L. Haskin

Aug. 13, 1924 – Mar. 19, 2018

Glenn L. Haskin, a life-long resident, passed away March 19, 2018, and Poulsbo has lost a great friend! Glenn was a proud member of NK’s Class of ’43. Born August 13, 1924, to Alice and Len Haskin, Glenn grew up enjoying and contributing to this community.

In the early years, he and his sister, Lorraine, lived in an apartment above their parents’ main street café along with a small gaggle of precocious merchants’ kids who also lived above or behind businesses. When WWII broke out, the government built the Project Homes to house workers needed at the Keyport & Bangor Naval Bases. Len’s café quickly grew to a staff of 52 employees with 4 cooks who made over 500 sack lunches a day! Glenn kept the wood stove full and sold bus tickets after school.

When he graduated in 1943, like so many in our community, he answered the call to serve. Glenn joined the Army Air Corp and trained as a pilot, flying a P-51. When the war ended, he = returned home, married Aubyn Ann Knudson and began to raise a family.

Glenn was always a hard worker. He worked for Knudson Motors, Fred Hill Materials, owned S&W Construction and later retired from the County. Glenn was always a community volunteer. He joined the Fire Dept in 1946 and was the oldest living Poulsbo firefighter. Proud to be elected Fire Commissioner; he advocated for and supported building a new Fire Hall. Glenn was a member of the Warren G. Harding Masonic Lodge for 72 years, serving as Master in 1970. He was a life-long member of the Sons of Norway and the First Lutheran Church. Like most, belonging to these groups kept him busy doing good deeds. When

it came to his own time and his own heavy equipment, Glenn was also very generous. His fingerprints are on many, many church and community projects.

Sadly, Aubyn Ann passed away in 1968, but in 1970 he married Isabelle Burdyshaw, who brought two daughters to their new blended family. Glenn’s small town life soon became a great adventure! Together, they visited all 50 states, explored 38 countries and enjoyed over 15 cruises. Glenn’s favorites were “walking” on the Great Wall of China and visiting Russia during the Cold War via Finland.

Glenn was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Aubyn Ann and his sister Lorraine (Nesby) Ray. He will be mourned and missed by his wife Isabelle and his daughters: Nancy (Henry) Leslie, Sue Haskin, Ardy Germaine, Cynthia (Cinzia) Burdyshaw and Debra (Marc) Horton. He will also be missed by his grandchildren: Sara (Chris) Cadamia, Ryan Sadayasu, Haley Horton, Shela (Jeremy) Dowlearn and Shelly Germaine as well as his great-grandchildren: Kyle Cadamia, Carter Dowlearn and Fendi Dowlearn.

Glenn wished to extend a heartfelt thank-you to Dr. Donald Sharman for his compassion and care. He also wished to thank Brian Smith, Jim Shields and Gene Fullerton for their special friendship.

A celebration of Glenn’s life will be held on April 7, 2018, at 11:00 am in the First Lutheran Church, Poulsbo, WA, followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the

Poulsbo Fire Dept. or the Poulsbo Historical Society. To view an extended story of Glenn’s life, visit www.kitsapdailynews.com/life/memories-of-a-poulsbo-volunteer-fireman.
