Frank Velarde

Frank Velarde of Port Orchard died Dec. 6, 2006, in Tacoma. He was 82 years old.

Mr. Velarde served in the U.S. Navy twice — first during World War II from 1942 until 1945 and again during the Korean War from 1951 until 1954. He eventually went to work at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton as a marine machinist before his retirement in 1985.

Mr. Velarde was born Nov. 17, 1924, in Ventura, Calif., to Elias and Frances (Moraga) Velarde. He graduated in 1941 from Ventura High School and married Laverne Young in Reno, Nev., on Jan. 10, 1961. She preceded him in death.

He was a fanatical Seahawks and Mariners fan who liked fishing and traveling.

Mr. Velarde is survived by his sons Gary Truitt of Marysville, Wash., Bobby (Debbie) Truitt of Issaquah, Wash., and Steven (Karen) Truitt of Port Orchard; daughters Diane Whitson of North Bend, Ore., and Debi (Fred) Hops of Port Orchard; sister Myra Harrison of Ventura; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brothers Elias, Mike, John, Henry and Victor Velarde and his sisters Ruth Regalado, Frances Fernandez, Felina Freiberg, Ramona Hedman, Barbara Velarde and Anne Strobbe.

Graveside services are planned for 2:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15, at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, Wash. An online memorial is available at www.lewischapel.com. Memorial donations are asked for the American Lung Association, 2625 Third Ave., Seattle, WA 98121-1213.
