Delores Hammond

April 17, 1939 – July 26, 2019

Delores R. (Preszler) Hammond, 80, of Poulsbo, Washington, passed away July 26, 2019, at Harrison Hospital surrounded by her family.

She was born April 17, 1939 in Bismarck, North Dakota, the daughter of Katharina and Emil Preszler. She was the fourth youngest of 13 children. On February 14, 1960, she married Arnold Hammond in Moffit, North Dakota.

Delores grew up on the family farm near Braddock, ND, and told many amazing stories of life on the farm. She attended a one-room schoolhouse a short distance up the road. Sewing, cooking and gardening were some of the many talents learned from her parents and passed down to her family.

She attended cosmetology school in Bismarck, ND, and, worked in the hair styling industry on Bainbridge Island and in Poulsbo. She was the owner of Hair Unlimited in Poulsbo, WA from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s. She was involved with Sons of Norway, Poulsbo Rotary, and Poulsbo Senior Center; and was an active member of Vinland Lutheran Church.

Delores enjoyed hiking, camping and skiing with her family. She loved caring for her home and landscaping. When Delores and Arnold retired, they traveled throughout the country by RV, visiting many places, but always making time to visit friends and family along the way.

She is survived by her husband, Arnold Hammond of Poulsbo; her son and daughter-in-law, Craig and Lainie Hammond of Brewster, WA; grandchildren Kaitlyn Hammond of Renton, WA, Kindra Hammond and Kelsey (Eric Miller) Hammond of Bremerton, WA, and step-grandchildren Jacob Patterson of Seattle, WA and Lydia (James) Vecchio of Crystal Lake, IL. She is also survived by her sister Shirley (David) Wu of Cary, NC; Bernice (Kent, dec.) Weiser of Hazelton, ND; and Donna (Neil) Reamann of Bismarck, ND. Her surviving brothers are Lenhard (Joan) Preszler of Huntington Beach, CA; Herbert (Frances) Preszler of Bismarck, ND; and Marvin Preszler of Mandan, ND. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Delores was preceded in death by her parents, and her daughter Valerie (Hammond) Brechbiel; and her siblings Raymond Preszler, Viola Hase, Irene Leno, Herman Preszler, Alice Pocta and Leona Pocta.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
