Bertha Sibon

Bertha “Doddie” Gladys Sibon, 94, who was born March 31, 1912, to William and Emma Brumm in West Point, Neb., died Feb. 3, 2007, at Bremerton Health and Rehabilitation. She was 94.

At 4 years old, her family moved to Goldendale, Wash. When she was 9 years old, the family moved to Crosby then settled in Lone Rock. She attended grade school at Lone Rock School. Mrs. Sibon later graduated, June 1929, from Port Washington Bay Union 6 High School, now Central Kitsap High School. She continued her education by attending business college in Seattle. After completing business college, Mrs. Sibon decided a career in business was not for her. She enjoyed waitressing at Tip Top Inn, however, Camp Union Logging Camp was more to her liking.

On Nov. 28, 1930, she married Bert Sibon in Seattle. They made their first home in Port Orchard. In October 1931, they moved to Lone Rock.

Their first daughter, Gloria Mae Elizabeth Sibon Malone, was born on Sept. 16, 1932. Another daughter, Thelma Jean Sibon Hintz, was born on Jan. 24, 1936. Mrs. Sibon was passionate about staying home to raise their daughters. Due to the financial burden, the couple decided to take in numerous foster children and borders.

Mrs. Sibon was one of many charter members who started the first Parent Teachers Association (PTA) at Seabeck Elementary School. She was a devoted member of Lone Rock Chapel while teaching Sunday School for many years. Later, she became a member of Crosby Chapel.

In 1953, Mrs. Sibon enrolled in the Nursing Program at Olympic College fulfilling the first step of her lifetime dream of becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse. She worked at Bremerton Naval Hospital. After completing more than 20 years of service, Mrs. Sibon retired to care for her mother. She was an active member of the Retired Nurses Association.

Mrs. Sibon is survived by her daughter Thelma Jean Hintz, of Seabeck; numerous nieces and nephews; eight grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; two sisters Marie Thelma Olson and Clara Leana Peery; and daughter Gloria Mae Malone.

A celebration of Mrs. Sibon’s life will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, 2007, at Crosby Chapel, located at 16404 NW Church Road, Seabeck. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a favorite charity.
