Bremerton — The North Kitsap girls’ volleyball team knew they had their work cut out last week, needing to win all three games to advance to the Narrows League Tournament.

Three wins later, their work had paid off.

Liz Tomsyck had 10 kills, Jennifer Buckner added 8 and the Vikings had 11 aces as they rolled passed the Bremerton Knights in four games, winning 25-17, 25-19, 21-25, and 25-20, for number three in a row.

“We played well for the first two games, but didn’t quite get the job done in the third,” NK Head Coach Clay Blackwood said. “I had pulled some of our first string girls out.”

Realizing the Vikings weren’t getting over the hump in the third, Blackwood put his first string back in to get the “W” in the fourth.

North Kitsap (4-3 in league, 11-13 overall), came out firing on all cylinders in the first and second games. The Vikings made very few errors in the first, capitalizing on a bunch of missed Knight kills. In game two, the Vikings compiled a 6-0 lead, thanks in large part to Buckner’s serving.

“(Buckner) is really beginning to be a key player on both offense and defense,” Blackwood said.

But in the third, after NK had pulled some of its starters, the game became much closer, with Bremerton maintaining a small lead. After dropping the game 20-25, Blackwood put some of his starters back in.

Senior Sarah Mostofi visibly helped get her team fired up, making some digs and blocks and inspiring her teammates.

“I was frustrated because people got down on each other ,” Mostofi said. “I know we need to play a lot better (at league).”

Coach Blackwood said he has been impressed by Mostofi’s effort and enthusiasm all season.

“(Mostofi) doesn’t get the big stats, but you can’t track all the calls she makes out there,” Blackwood said.

For the win, the Vikings went back to their traditional formula: make good digs, get setter Kearney Bangs under the ball and let the outside hitters do their job. With libero Jamie Heins making 20 digs and Bangs getting 24 assists, they did just that, with a 25-20 win in the fourth.

“This is a great team, we have a good defense and our offense is better than last year,” Mostofi said. “I love my coach and my teammates and I just hope we do our best (at league).”
