BREMERTON — The Los Angeles-class fast-attack submarine USS Bremerton (SSN 698) is scheduled to arrive at Naval Base Kitsap on Feb. 25, marking Bremerton’s first visit to its namesake city since 2012, according to Submarine Force Pacific Fleet Public Affairs.

Bremerton, commanded by Cmdr. Wes Bringham, is home-ported in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, home to the U.S. submarine force in the Pacific.

Bremerton’s last visit to her hometown came in May 2012. On Jan. 11, 2011, the Bremerton-Olympic Peninsula Chapter of the Navy League adopted the submarine in a formal ceremony. While in the area, the ship’s crew will meet with local officials, host prospective recruits, and participate in a park clean-up project.

The 11th submarine of the Los Angeles class, Bremerton is currently the oldest submarine in the U.S. fleet. She carries a crew of more than 130 Sailors, and is the second U.S. ship to bear the name. Bremerton was launched by her sponsor, Mrs. Henry M. Jackson, in July 1978 and commissioned on March 28, 1981.

Fast-attack submarines like Bremerton are designed to seek and destroy enemy submarines and surface ships, carry out intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions, support aircraft carrier and expeditionary strike groups, and engage in mine warfare.
