Transient man charged with arson

A 58-year-old transient man has been charged with arson and harassment after he reportedly set fire to the porch stairs of a relative’s home in Navy Yard City.

Jeffrey Ames was arrested by Kitsap County Sheriff’s deputies on Sunday, Nov. 25. According to charging documents, Ames appeared to have been caught on a motion-activated surveillance camera installed by the homeowner.

According to statements made by one of the homeowners, Ames had previously stated his intent to burn down the house. The owner told police that Ames’ intent to completely engulf the home and “burn the house to the ground.”

When he was apprehended, officers reported that Ames was wearing the same clothes as the individual in the photos provided to responding deputies by the homeowner. One arresting deputy said in the case report, “I can say with absolute certainty that [Ames is] the male seen in the surveillance photos.”

According to the Kitsap County Prosecutor’s Office, Ames is being held on $51,000 bail for one count of arson in the second degree, with a special allegation of domestic violence and one count of harassment.
