The Trails at Silverdale is taking shape

With every spot in the shopping center filled or in negotiations for a business to occupy it, The Trails at Silverdale is nearing completion.

SILVERDALE — With every spot in the shopping center filled or in negotiations for a business to occupy it, The Trails at Silverdale is nearing completion.

“There’s not a space that isn’t occupied or that we’re in negotiations with one or more companies to occupy it,” said Paul Brett, general manager with CenterCal, the development company that owns the center. “Things are really taking shape.”

And with the opening of the Corner Bakery and Cafe, the total number of open stores is 11, with five others scheduled to open in late August through November.

“I’m at the center one or two times a week,” Brett said. “I talk with the store managers and with the customers and everyone’s really pleased with the mix (of occupants).”

He said people are happy to see new companies come to Silverdale, such as Total Wine, Ultra and Home Goods.

“Shoppers say they are really glad we brought those stores here,” he said. “Some of them are Navy people and they are familiar with the names because they’ve lived elsewhere in the country where those stores were. Others just are glad to have something new.”

Thus far, there has been two major times when stores opened — in the fall of 2015 and the spring of 2016. With several stores ready to come online soon or this fall, Brett said there is some talk of having a grand opening party once the entire center is filled.

“We’ve talked about that,” he said. “Each store has their own opening event, but having something for the entire center would be a good thing.”

What’s still in flux are the negotiations for a long-promised grocery store and two locations that have been built to house restaurants.

Brett said there are two companies they are negotiating with to fill the 28,000-square-foot location for a grocery store. He said he can’t name them, but is hopeful that the store can open early next year.

“Once we get a signed agreement, it will take about four months to build (the interior of the store),” he said.

CenterCal is negotiating with two companies that operate stores that offer organic, healthy foods. But, he said, the stores also offer “anything you might find at a regular grocery store like wine and steaks.”

Two spaces for restaurants are yet to be occupied; Brett said options are Mexican, Italian or seafood.

“There are multiple concepts we’re looking at,” he said. “But we plan to open at least two more restaurants.”

Original plans to have a movie theater at the center fell through when the Silverdale AMC invested $2 million in upgrading their existing theater, which is just blocks away. While that was disappointing to CenterCal officials, they’ve focused on bringing in other new and interesting shops and restaurants.

The concept of a center where shoppers park once and walk along the sidewalks from store to store is still in place. There are overhangs on most stores to protect customers from the rain, and outdoor areas with coverings where people can sit around a fire and take a break. Some restaurants also have outdoor eating areas.

“There’s no plans to rain-proof the center,” Brett said. “But it is a place where shoppers are protected from the elements, for the most part.”

Some locals were surprised to see parking in the center of the shopping because that was where they anticipated the open green space. But Brett said the open areas were always planned for spaces between the shops.

While signs noting the name of the center have gone up along the center’s west wall, more signs are to come.

“Ultra is in the process of painting the back of its store that faces the highway,” he said. “They plan something that will promote their products, and it will be colorful.”

All signs, including those that are painted on the exterior walls of the center, must be approved by Kitsap County, Brett said, but all of the stores have the opportunity to do something like what Ultra is doing. He wasn’t sure whether other businesses were planning on adding color to their highway-facing exteriors.

Currently in the center are AT&T, Blazin Onion Burger Co., Chipotle, Forever 21, Home Goods, Jersey Mike’s, MOD Pizza, Silverdale Smiles Dentistry, Sleep Number, Total Wine, Ultra Beauty, Verizon and Corner Bakery and Cafe.

Scheduled to open toward the end of August are DSW Shoes and Old Navy; Purpose Boutique, in early September; and Habit Burger at the end of November.
